On the 10 April 2008 a new Constituent Assembly in Nepal was elected.
The elections brought hope for placing human rights at the heart of the Constituent Assembly (CA) work and the new Maoist government made specific commitments to end impunity and improve human rights situation in Nepal, including the rights of women and Women Human Rights Defenders.
Women’s political participation was enhanced – over a third of the new CA members are women – but more measures must be taken to sustain increased political participation.
Commitments to improve women’s rights were not upheld and in the past year, two Women Human Rights Defenders were murdered.
