In the lead up to expected October elections in Myanmar (Burma), the APYN will be campaigning on the ‘three freedoms’ of expression, association and assembly in Burma, working with an ASEAN targeted campaign online and developing the campaign for 3 young people imprisoned in Burma. What can you do? Take action now online. Keep checking APYN online for information on campaigning opportunities in the next few months!
The Asia Pacific Youth Activist Calendar is a range of different campaigns and action opportunities that are distributed through APYN, in 2011, we also hope to develop some Youth Campaign Teams on specific human rights themes – keep your eye on APYN online for more information or apyncampaigns@gmail.com to express your interest! (please note, it may be some months before you are contacted about these opportunities).
2. YOUNG PEOPLE TAKING ACTION AND MOBILISING ACROSS THE ASIA PACIFIC !- The Asia Pacific region is home to about half of the worlds spoken languages: more than 3,500 languages are spoken in Asia Pacific out of about 6,800 languages spoken in the entire world (UNESCO 2004)
We need your expertise! Young volunteer facilitators and specific skills (such as marketing, media and campaigning) volunteers, we also need volunteers to help with translation, administration and more… all will work remotely but in contact through online communications with others! Share your skills, interest and networks with your friends in the region!
Are you from Indonesia (living in Indonesia or living abroad), do you speak Chinese? Are you connected to Burma groups or networks or are you part of a youth organisation that’s looking to see how regional networks might collaborate? Our friends in the Pacific are also networking and developing plans for activities this year!
Contact us now (apyncampaigns@gmail.com) for more information!
There’s also a range of different online networks that form APYN – check out some here , get involved in one now! All are welcome in APYN! Remember, its what YOU make of it!
3. SKILLS & YOUTH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Everyone’s an expert at something – sharing our expertise strengthens our collective effort
A new Youth Ambassador round (November 2010 – August 2011) will provide the opportunity for 30 young people from the Asia Pacific to develop community leadership skills through the development, implementation and evaluation of local action plans. Look out for the application details in the near future.
Remember, this is a long term commitment, but many Youth Ambassadors have found it rewarding.
We’re also hoping to make available online training calendar opportunities and an opportunity for young people to run similar workshops in their communities. If you are a trainer, or are interested in this, please contact us at apyncampaigns@gmail.com If you are interested in attending, presenting or learning, please look out for the schedule or activities soon!
Themes asked for so far include:…but if you have expertise in an area that you’d like to share through an online workshop, please let us know! (or if these themes are really not interesting to you!)

4. SETTING UP OUR SYSTEMS: Systems & Sustainability
As APYN is a network of individuals, we also know that for longer term sustainability we need to provide some online systems to help people connect and stay in touch. We’ll be focusing on developing tools that are easy for people to use! So – if you are an IT guru or enjoy data work, or have some time to volunteer to improve communications then please volunteer! (apyncampaigns@gmail.com)
It’s OUR network, let’s make it HAPPEN! (and have some fun!)
…what do YOU think?
