(按此瀏覽中文版)

Thank you for taking action! We mailed your letters on 11 October 2011.

Chiou Ho-shun is a Taiwanese man who was sentenced to death after an unfair trial and may be executed anytime after the Prosecutor General rejected an extraordinary appeal for retrial. Asia Pacific YOUth need to ask the Taiwanese authorities to not execute Chiou – let’s flood the Taiwanese authorities with letters!

Why should YOU(th) take action?

The death penalty is cruel, inhumane, and violates the right to life

Chiou’s sentence was based on his confession that was extracted under torture which led to an unfair trial! Another reason is that the death penalty is cruel, inhumane, and violates the right to life!

Send a letter to President of Taiwan  before 10 October 2011 – ask him to NOT execute Chiou Ho-shun and call for an immediate moratorium on executions with a view to abolish the death penalty. Your letters will be sent in Chinese (see the English translation below) and we will mail it by post with your details as shown below and copies will also be sent to the Taipei Detention Center for Chiou.

What’s his story?

In 1988, Chiou Ho-shun and 11 others were detained and tried for the kidnapping and killing of Lu Cheng and for murdering Ko Hung Yu-Lan. They say that during the first four months of their detention, they had no contact with the outsiders and were tortured to make them confess.

What’s really strange is that Chiou was sentenced to death while the others were all sentenced to prison terms!

In 1994, two public prosecutors and 10 police officers who handled the kidnapping and killing of Lu Cheng were convicted for using torture to extract confessions. In 2003, the police even said that another death row inmate had confessed to killing Lu Cheng just before his execution but they chose to cover it up. However, Chiou’s confession, which was extracted under torture, still counts as evidence in the courts and they have not investigated the death row inmate’s confession.

The 11 who were sentenced to prison have already completed their terms (except for one who died in prison) while Chiou’s case has bounced back and forth between the High Court and Supreme Court 11 times.
