DO SOMETHING: On 15 July, the Government Critic Mam Sonando from Cambodia was detained and charged with offences against the State
Government critic Mam Sonando, aged 71, was arrested at his home in Cambodia on 15 July. He has been charged with offences against the state and if convicted he will serve a very long jail sentence. He is a prisoner of conscience who is being unfairly charged because of his political views.
From now until 12 Sep, send an appeal to the government of Cambodia to demand the release of Mam Sonando and request the authorities to respect the right of freedom of expression in Cambodia.
Who is Mam Sonando and the Association of Democrats?
Mam Sonando owns one of Cambodia’s few independent radio stations, Beehive Radio. He is also the head of a popular non-governmental organization that promotes human rights and democracy, the Association of Democrats.
Why was Mam Sonando arrested?
Mam Sonando was charged with six offences. The authorities claimed that radio station owners and the members of the Association of Democrats incited the villagers in Kratie province to break away from Cambodia in order to become an independent state. The real reason for the prosecution seems to be the radio’s previous report of the authorities ‘crimes against humanity. Since Mam Sonando’s arrest, members of the Association of Democrats have been harassed, briefly detained and prevented from collecting thumbprints for a petition calling for Mam Sonandos release.
Mam Sonando had been detained before but he was released due to the immense international pressure and local campaign urging for freedom of expression.
