What happened?

On 28 December 2011, Shi’a religious leaders from Nangkrenang village in Sampang district, Madura Island were warned by the Omben sub-district police that their community would be attacked by anti-Shi’a groups. They requested police protection, but only one police and one military officer were there on the morning of 29 December when a mob of around 500 hundred people (some carrying sharp weapons) entered the village and set fire to a place of worship, boarding school and various homes in the area.

According to local sources, the officers did not intervene but instead recorded the attacks on their mobile phones. Although 25 Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers arrived at the scene an hour later, nothing was done prevent the attacks or protect the community.

After the attacks, around 335 villagers, including at least 107 children, were evacuated to a temporary shelter at a sports complex.

On 4 January 2011 the Sampang district authorities and police started pressuring community members to return to their homes. Water supplies to the shelter were reduced and the authorities even threatened to evict some community members from the shelter! Eventually, the local government authorities forced them onto trucks back to their village on the evening of 12 January 2012.

Dear General/Governor,

I am appalled by the news that the Nangkrenang village in Sampang district, East Java, was attacked by anti-Shi’a groups.

More importantly, I am concerned that the Shi’a community is at risk of further attacks.

One person was arrested for the attack but has since been released.

Many of the children were afraid to go back to their homes and schools. Conditions in the shelter were reported to be inadequate, with limited access to clean water and sanitation. In fact, the community refused to leave the shelter until they received adequate protection from the police and the perpetrators of the attack were brought to justice.

This is not the first time the Shi’a community in Sampang, East Java has faced intimidation and attacks – it happened in 2006 and 2011. They have also reportedly been pressured by anti-Shi’a groups to convert to Sunni Islam.

According to a local credible source, the three men were taken by military intelligence agents after they flew in to the Manila domestic airport terminal from Zamboanga City on 3 January 2012 and they haven’t been heard or seen since then.

According to a reliable source, the arrest of the three men comes weeks after the Armed Forces of the Philippines filed 300 “John Doe” (unnamed) complaint affidavits against 300 residents of Cambug village. In a “John Doe” complaint affidavit or warrant, the authorities do not give the name of the subject of the complaint or arrest. Because such documents can be used against anyone, they have led to arbitrary arrest and detention.

Narayan Reddy has been leading the campaign since Sahoo's detention on 25 November 2011. ©Amnesty International

Narayan Reddy is the leader of a campaign that has been going on for seven years against the state from acquiring 1,600 hectares of land in five villages (the majority of which are common lands farmed by villagers) for a US$12 billion plant proposed by South Korean steel giant POSCO. He is also a leader of the Communist Party of India in the eastern state of Orissa.

What happened to Narayan Reddy?

On 23 December 2011, Reddy was detained after being charged with murder at a clash on 15 December 2011 between steel plant workers and local protesters against the steel plant – but we hear from our friends at AI that Reddy was not directly involved in this! In fact, AI believes that the charges are an attempt to silence Reddy’s ongoing campaign.

Narayan Reddy is now in Samagol prison in Orissa state and his petition for release on bail has just been refused by the local courts but he will probably make further applications for bail again.

The planned steel plant is the biggest foreign direct investment project in India. However, for the last seven years, campaigners have blockaded the area, preventing the authorities and representatives of POSCO from gaining access to the area.

Narayan Reddy has been leading the campaign against the acquisition of the lands after Abhay Sahoo’s detention on 25 November 2011. Abhay Sahoo is also a leading member of the Communist Party of India in Orissa. The state has filed false charges against him and 10 other activists.

On 12 October 2011, Burma released more than 6,000 prisoners but only about 200 of those released were political prisoners or prisoners of conscience (people being held for peacefully exercising their human rights). All prisoners of conscience must be released immediately!

There are around 1,800 political prisoners still behind bars in Burma who are being held in awful conditions, some are being tortured and subject to unfair trials too. This has to stop!

Last year, the first elections in 20 years were held and political reform was promised. After this initial release of prisoners, our expectations are high BUT there are still thousands of people being held unfairly.
Since 1962, Burma has been under military rule. In 1990, there were the first elections, following the 1988 uprisings, where the National League of Democracy (Ann Sang Suu Kai’s Party) won, but the results were not accepted by the military junta who remained in power and refused to step down.

In 2010, the first elections in 20 years took place in which the Union Solidarity and Development Party won (a military backed party). The National League of Democracy was banned from participating and they urged people to boycott the elections which they said were unfair and undemocratic.

Thousands have been arrested over the years for peacefully expressing their views and challenging the government’s total control of the country and its people. There are still laws that criminalise peaceful expression of political dissent and people are frequently arrested without warrant and held. Judicial proceedings against political detainees do not meet international standards for fair trial, and torture is common, especially during interrogation.

WRAP stands for ‘White Ribbon Asia Pacific’, a growing movement of men and boys from throughout the Asia Pacific who pledge to never commit, excuse, or remain silent about violence against women (click here to read more about this). And we want YOU(th) to join us!

So what can YOU(th) do?

25 November is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In 1991 a group of Canadian men – who were outraged at the 1989 shooting rampage targeting women at École Polytechnique – started a tradition of wearing a white ribbon at this time of year to show their opposition to violence against women. In the last twenty years, the white ribbon movement has spread throughout the world.

Join us by signing the White Ribbon Asia Pacific pledge below!

Sign the pledge!

Share the pledge – http://bit.ly/addyourname – with your friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Why violence against women? Why men?

Most guys don’t commit violence against women. Indeed, most agree that physical or sexual assault is completely unacceptable. Yet at least one in three of the women in our lives will be a victim of gender-based violence in their lifetime. This could be our sisters, our mothers, our partners, or our daughters. It could be our classmates, colleagues, co-workers, or our friends.

Violence against women and girls in all its forms – including beatings, abuse, sexual assault or unwanted touching, rape, sexual harassment, genital mutilation, murder, financial or social control and manipulation – is the most widespread, yet hidden, human rights abuse of our time.

Violence against women is not just a women’s issue. Now more and more men and boys throughout the Asia Pacific are recognising the positive and crucial role that they too can play in ending violence against women. Because men very often look to other men as their role models, we need to stand up and speak out against violence and gender inequality. This includes challenging widespread violence-supporting attitudes that allow, and indeed encourage, a minority of men to be violent. When other men make jokes or degrading comments about women, these promote a culture of sexism and inequality which makes violence and violence-supporting attitudes towards women seem normal. Instead, by vocally challenging sexism and violence, we can show others that being a man shouldn’t mean better treatment than the female half of the population. Being a man shouldn’t mean sex on demand. Being a man shouldn’t mean bursting into fits of jealous rage when our partner socialises with other men, or wants to spend time with their family and friends.

Being a man should mean, not only that we won’t COMMIT violence against women, but also that we will not EXCUSE or REMAIN SILENT about violence against women.

Take Action to Ask the Indonesian Authorities to Remove the New Regulation that Allows Female Genital Mutilation!

In Indonesia, a new regulation by the Ministry of Health allows female genital mutilation (FGM) by certain medical professionals, like doctors, midwives and nurses. It defines the practice as “the act of scratching the skin covering the front of the clitoris, without hurting the clitoris”.

Why should YOU(th) take action?

Female genital mutilation is definitely NOT just “a scratch on the skin” – it is a discriminatory and painful form of violence against women!

Our friends in AI tell us that some of the reasons people chose female genital mutilation for their baby girls are for religious reasons, to ensure the girl’s “cleanliness”, to avoid diseases, to perpetuate cultural or local practices or to regulate or suppress the girls’ urge towards “sexual activity” during adulthood.

This new regulation also violates a whole list of Indonesian laws! (Scroll down for the entire list)

In 2010, 1.5 billion people were living on less than US$2.0 per day in the Asia Pacific region. Hunger and poverty are both violations of the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of individuals and their families, as protected for all people as human rights.

Food, water, work, health, education (and many more) are all basic rights that allow us to live in dignity.

We may not be able to feed everyone tomorrow, but as young people in Asia Pacific, YOU(th) can show the region that hunger & poverty are one of today’s biggest human rights violations and World Food Day (October 16)/International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (October 17) is your chance to do it!

More Human Rights = Less Poverty It may seem weird to put the two together but poverty is actually the largest human rights violation today! Food, water, work, health, education (and many more) are all basic rights that allow us to live in dignity. What’s worst is that people living in poverty are usually stripped of rights to freedom of expression and political participation so they are left voiceless. More Human Rights will empower them to break through barriers and escape poverty!

DO SOMETHING

We want the world to know how serious hunger & poverty is in Asia Pacific by putting together a report by YOU(th) called Under US$2.0 Recipes – YOU(th) on Hunger & Poverty in Asia Pacific and we’re asking all of YOU(th) to contribute!!!

Since YOUth (especially in Asia Pacific!) are super creative, this report is going to be in the form of a cook book or a cooking show! Send your recipes now!

Got 3 seconds? Add to our cook book!

If you only have 3 seconds, then just share the ingredients that can be bought for, or under US$2.0 and the cooking instructions. Please send us a photo of the final dish if you can!

If you facilitate at least 5 friends to each submit a recipe (and photo if possible), then you will receive a certificate for facilitating World Food Day/International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with APYN as long as you provide their names and emails for verification!

Got 30 minutes? Add to our cooking show!

If you’re feeling very creative, then put on your chef’s hat and take a video of yourself cooking! Your video will be featured on the APYN Cooking Show on YouTube!

Anyone who sends a video will also receive a certificate for facilitating World Food Day/International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with APYN!

What’s his story?

In 1988, Chiou Ho-shun and 11 others were detained and tried for the kidnapping and killing of Lu Cheng and for murdering Ko Hung Yu-Lan. They say that during the first four months of their detention, they had no contact with the outsiders and were tortured to make them confess.

What’s really strange is that Chiou was sentenced to death while the others were all sentenced to prison terms!

In 1994, two public prosecutors and 10 police officers who handled the kidnapping and killing of Lu Cheng were convicted for using torture to extract confessions. In 2003, the police even said that another death row inmate had confessed to killing Lu Cheng just before his execution but they chose to cover it up. However, Chiou’s confession, which was extracted under torture, still counts as evidence in the courts and they have not investigated the death row inmate’s confession.

The 11 who were sentenced to prison have already completed their terms (except for one who died in prison) while Chiou’s case has bounced back and forth between the High Court and Supreme Court 11 times.

DO SOMETHING: Ongoing legal challenge over plans for a bauxite mine might threaten the rights of the Dongria Kondh adivasi (Indigenous) people in India!

A villager standing on land he once owned, beneath an unfinished conveyor belt designed to transport bauxite ore from the Niyamgiri hills to the Vedanta Alumina plant, Lanjigarh, Orissa, India, June 2008. © Sanjit Das

For years, the state-owned Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) and and Sterlite Industries India (Sterlite), a subsidiary of UK-based Vedanta Resources (Vedanta) have been proposing plans for a bauxite mine in Niyamgiri Hills.

In 2009, the Indian Minister of Environment and Forests (MoEF) gave clearance for their proposal – which led to protests among Dongria Kondh.

The Dongria Kondh living in the Niyamgiri Hills in the eastern state of Orissa, India, consider their home as sacred and depend on it for water, food, and cultural values. The proposed project would violate their rights as an indigenous community to water, food, health, work, and their cultural values and identity – not to mention that the Indian authorities didn’t ask the community for their consent or give them any information on the project!

Luckily, in 2010, the Indian MoEF rejected the proposal after finding out that the project would violate the rights of Dongria Kondh on the hills. BUT in April 2011, OMC filed a petition before the Indian Supreme Court, challenging the MoEF decision!

The Supreme Court is supposed to make a decision soon so we have a little time to do something to protect the rights of Dongria Kondh!

Got 3 seconds?

Send a letter to the Indian MoEF to take action to protect Dongria Kondh by adding your name below! We will add your names to AI’s petition and they will send the letters to the Minister.
