What happened?

On 28 December 2011, Shi’a religious leaders from Nangkrenang village in Sampang district, Madura Island were warned by the Omben sub-district police that their community would be attacked by anti-Shi’a groups. They requested police protection, but only one police and one military officer were there on the morning of 29 December when a mob of around 500 hundred people (some carrying sharp weapons) entered the village and set fire to a place of worship, boarding school and various homes in the area.

According to local sources, the officers did not intervene but instead recorded the attacks on their mobile phones. Although 25 Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers arrived at the scene an hour later, nothing was done prevent the attacks or protect the community.

After the attacks, around 335 villagers, including at least 107 children, were evacuated to a temporary shelter at a sports complex.

On 4 January 2011 the Sampang district authorities and police started pressuring community members to return to their homes. Water supplies to the shelter were reduced and the authorities even threatened to evict some community members from the shelter! Eventually, the local government authorities forced them onto trucks back to their village on the evening of 12 January 2012.

Got 3 seconds?

Send a letter to the Head of the Indonesian National Police and the Governor of East Java just by adding your name below! We will deliver all the letters to authorities by post with your details appearing as below.

Dear General/Governor,

I am appalled by the news that the Nangkrenang village in Sampang district, East Java, was attacked by anti-Shi’a groups.

More importantly, I am concerned that the Shi’a community is at risk of further attacks.

Therefore, I am writing to urge you to:

Immediately investigate the failure of the police to prevent the attacks and protect the community and further, put in place a proactive strategy for preventing and addressing incidents of religiously based violence;

Take effective steps to ensure that all religious minorities are protected and allowed to practise their faith free from fear, intimidation and attacks.

Additional information:

One person was arrested for the attack but has since been released.

Many of the children were afraid to go back to their homes and schools. Conditions in the shelter were reported to be inadequate, with limited access to clean water and sanitation. In fact, the community refused to leave the shelter until they received adequate protection from the police and the perpetrators of the attack were brought to justice.

This is not the first time the Shi’a community in Sampang, East Java has faced intimidation and attacks – it happened in 2006 and 2011. They have also reportedly been pressured by anti-Shi’a groups to convert to Sunni Islam.

This year, we think we should deal with some unfinished business – the regulation that allows female genital mutilation by certain medical professionals in Indonesia. This is a discriminatory and painful form of violence against women and young women in Asia Pacific cannot stand by and do nothing about it!

©Volontaire

Around International Women’s Day, our friends at AI will handover signatures to the Indonesian authorities to demand them to repeal this regulation and we think it’s important to make sure that the Asia Pacific youth voice is represented in the petition – don’t you think so?

Any friends and organizations who will be in Indonesia at that time and would like to take part in handing over the petitions to the authorities with our friends at AI, please fill the form below.

What will I need to do?
Organize one activity in your local community to collect signatures for the petition to call on Indonesia authorities to remove the regulation that allows female genital mutilation by certain medical professionals in Indonesia. The activity needs to be organized fairly soon and all the collected signatures need to be delivered to APYN by Thursday, 1 March, 2012.

Here are some ideas:

Invite your friends to a coffee shop and discuss the issue with them. Afterwards, ask them to add their names to the petition letter.

Set up a small petition stall on your campus and ask your school mates to add their names to the petition letter

Put the petition papers in your bag, and whoever you see, tell them about the issue and ask them to add their names

Got other ideas? Leave a comment!

What is a Youth Campaign Team?

A small group of young people volunteering to organize activities in their local community on the same topic – here, the issue is female genital mutilation in Indonesia. After the activities are finished, the group may choose to expand and do a longer term campaign on the topic.

What are the preferred selection criteria for the taskforce?

Passionate about the campaign issue

Aged (ideally) between 18-25 years of age (but it’s OK if you are older!)

Able to access the internet at least weekly.

Able to commit AT LEAST 3-4 hours per week to organize the activity in your application below

Respond to group emails and participate in discussions

Able to engage at least 5 other young people (your friends) in the campaign (through networks) – or at least try too!

Able to share skills with other young people (online skills, activist skills, design skills, creative campaigning ideas, translations, administration and many more!)

Able to communicate in English, and (preferable) translate into local language

How do I apply?
Simply complete this form by Tuesday, 14 February 2012 and we will be in contact with you as soon as possible!

Thanks for taking action! Your letters have been sent to our friends at AI for delivery to the Burma embassy in Jakarta and Tokyo on 22 November, 2011, two days before the first anniversary of Aung San Suu Kyi’s release.

On 12 October 2011, Burma released more than 6,000 prisoners but only about 200 of those released were political prisoners or prisoners of conscience (people being held for peacefully exercising their human rights). All prisoners of conscience must be released immediately!

Why should YOU(th) take action?

There are around 1,800 political prisoners still behind bars in Burma who are being held in awful conditions, some are being tortured and subject to unfair trials too. This has to stop!

Last year, the first elections in 20 years were held and political reform was promised. After this initial release of prisoners, our expectations are high BUT there are still thousands of people being held unfairly. Let’s urge Burma to do more and release the rest of its political prisoners.

Got 3 seconds?

Add your name to the letter below and ask the Chairman of the newly-established Myanmar National Human Rights Commission to press the authorities to immediately and unconditionally release all prisoners of conscience. Your letters will appear with your details as below and delivered via our friends at AI to the Burma embassy in an ASEAN country on the first anniversary of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest. You have from NOW until 1 November 2011 to add your name!

Since 1962, Burma has been under military rule. In 1990, there were the first elections, following the 1988 uprisings, where the National League of Democracy (Ann Sang Suu Kai’s Party) won, but the results were not accepted by the military junta who remained in power and refused to step down.

In 2010, the first elections in 20 years took place in which the Union Solidarity and Development Party won (a military backed party). The National League of Democracy was banned from participating and they urged people to boycott the elections which they said were unfair and undemocratic.

Thousands have been arrested over the years for peacefully expressing their views and challenging the government’s total control of the country and its people. There are still laws that criminalise peaceful expression of political dissent and people are frequently arrested without warrant and held. Judicial proceedings against political detainees do not meet international standards for fair trial, and torture is common, especially during interrogation.

And we want YOU(th) to join us!

So what can YOU(th) do?

25 November is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In 1991 a group of Canadian men – who were outraged at the 1989 shooting rampage targeting women at École Polytechnique – started a tradition of wearing a white ribbon at this time of year to show their opposition to violence against women. In the last twenty years, the white ribbon movement has spread throughout the world.

Why violence against women? Why men?

Most guys don’t commit violence against women. Indeed, most agree that physical or sexual assault is completely unacceptable. Yet at least one in three of the women in our lives will be a victim of gender-based violence in their lifetime. This could be our sisters, our mothers, our partners, or our daughters. It could be our classmates, colleagues, co-workers, or our friends.

Violence against women and girls in all its forms – including beatings, abuse, sexual assault or unwanted touching, rape, sexual harassment, genital mutilation, murder, financial or social control and manipulation – is the most widespread, yet hidden, human rights abuse of our time.

Violence against women is not just a women’s issue. Now more and more men and boys throughout the Asia Pacific are recognising the positive and crucial role that they too can play in ending violence against women. Because men very often look to other men as their role models, we need to stand up and speak out against violence and gender inequality. This includes challenging widespread violence-supporting attitudes that allow, and indeed encourage, a minority of men to be violent. When other men make jokes or degrading comments about women, these promote a culture of sexism and inequality which makes violence and violence-supporting attitudes towards women seem normal. Instead, by vocally challenging sexism and violence, we can show others that being a man shouldn’t mean better treatment than the female half of the population. Being a man shouldn’t mean sex on demand. Being a man shouldn’t mean bursting into fits of jealous rage when our partner socialises with other men, or wants to spend time with their family and friends.

Being a man should mean, not only that we won’t COMMIT violence against women, but also that we will not EXCUSE or REMAIN SILENT about violence against women.

Take Action to Ask the Indonesian Authorities to Remove the New Regulation that Allows Female Genital Mutilation!

In Indonesia, a new regulation by the Ministry of Health allows female genital mutilation (FGM) by certain medical professionals, like doctors, midwives and nurses. It defines the practice as “the act of scratching the skin covering the front of the clitoris, without hurting the clitoris”.

Why should YOU(th) take action?

Female genital mutilation is definitely NOT just “a scratch on the skin” – it is a discriminatory and painful form of violence against women!

Our friends in AI tell us that some of the reasons people chose female genital mutilation for their baby girls are for religious reasons, to ensure the girl’s “cleanliness”, to avoid diseases, to perpetuate cultural or local practices or to regulate or suppress the girls’ urge towards “sexual activity” during adulthood.

This new regulation also violates a whole list of Indonesian laws! (Scroll down for the entire list)

Got 3 seconds?
Please ask the Indonesian authorities to immediately repeal the 2010 Regulation of the Minister of Health on “female circumcision” (“sunat perempuan”) by sending a letter to them – just add your name below! We hope to deliver all the letters by hand (appearing with your details like below) on or before 8 March 2012 – International Women’s Day.

Got 3 minutes?
Send this link - http://bit.ly/nofgm - to 30 of your friends and ask them to add their name to the letter in Indonesian.

Here’s MORE from friends in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, and the rest of the world!

From Bangladesh

“Living in dignity means living independently. without being totally dependent on others.”

“Living in dignity is living with respect.”

“When a person is confident about what he is doing and honest, he can live in dignity.”

“When one is proud of what he or she is and what he/she have he can live in dignity.”

“Living in dignity is independence.”

From India

“Ability to voice concern and fight injustice and Availability of chance for economic mobility.”

From Indonesia

Mengapa?

“I think it’s having the freedom to make your own decisions without the judgment of others burdening you because you know your self-worth will always conquer the opinions of people
around you.”

“I guess dignity means being happy in yourself.”

“To me, dignity means respecting yourself.”

“I think dignity means to live fully without sacrificing your integrity or identity.”

“Living with dignity means not having to compromise all the time, to live in peace, to be who I am.”

“Not doing wrong to others, living without ego but not living without none.”

“Dignity means more than pride or worthiness to me. It also includes self-respect and being able to be respected as who you are and your values. Treating others with dignity is treating others the way we would like to be treated, ex. caring about others; everyone has the right to be treated with respect. Dignity is also being able to be granted our fundamental rights as human beings and being granted freedom.”

“Dignity simply put, is the ability to live simply but also to simply inspire other’s awe to create a sense of self-worth.”

“To me living with dignity is when you live by practicing all good moral values, so that when you die people will talk about the amazing things that you have done in your lifetime.”

“Dignity means to be able to feel proud of whatever you have. Not going around boasting to others, but appreciating whatever you have and feeling satisfied with your life.”

“It means getting the respect that everyone deserves equally.”

“Dignity is the quality in a person that dictates how he carries himself.”

“I guess it’s pride.”

“Doing what is required.”

“Honor? Pride?”

“Well, dignity is something that everyone has, but depending on someone’s personality, their values are different. An arrogant person may have lots of dignity, and might not do anything stupid because it risks damaging their dignity, whereas a person like me, someone who doesn’t care much about dignity, will do something stupid because they don’t care.”

From Nepal

“For me it means the the equal access to every rights, services or privileges provided by the government to its citizens.”

“In short it is guarantee of social justice, respect of human rights and forum to develop one’s potentiality.”

“I think I will feel dignified if I get my basic human rights, can exercises the same privileges as my fellow colleagues and get opportunity according to my knowledge and skills. But I am cautious that when I seek dignity in my life I have to think about the dignity of others as well.”

“Dignity is all about equity, respect of basic human rights and fight against discrimination.”

“Its a respect of my inherent right to decide about myself. The way I behave and the way I live are my choices provided that I don’t interfere with the rights of others”

“For me, in simple terms, living a life of dignity means I get basic human rights to exercise, food to eat ,access to education and health and provision of job according to my skills. The society where my kids can laugh and play, the country where I don’t suffer discrimination and the world where I can work independently can provide the dignity that I pursue in life.”

“Everybody deserves a human respect and I am not the exception. No body can be a exception just because he is financially weak, physically challenged or educationally underprivileged. Living with dignity means the guarantee of this human respect”

“If we have full control of our life and enable others to do so, a life of dignity will exist.”

“Its simple, work according to one’s skill and ability and payment according to one’s need. Its human dignity.”

From Pakistan

“Self Respect”

“To be respected for my beliefs, aspirations and hopes”

“To live a life where you have an adequate level of resources and rights. By resources, I mean that a person should be provided the basic necessicities of life like food, clothes, shelter and water. Also, one should have the fundamental rights he needs to survive in a society, like security, privacy, freedom of speech, freedom of movement etc.”

“Access to justice, basic necessities of life like health, education and housing facilities, and equal opportunities to grow.”

“It means having the freedom to live as you want to.”

“Being in Pakistan, living in dignity means getting 2 meals a day and a shelter to rest after all day struggle.”

“Meeting one’s basic social and economic needs and enjoying basic human rights.”

“Not bowing to the overpowering wrong.”

“To earn respect from others and being appreciated for it”

“Serving Pakistan and Islam without slacking in my required (and relevant) duties and also, without giving up the morals of unity, faith, discipline and truthfulness.”

“To have the freedom and means available to make the choice that i want to make.”

“Protection of your life and provision of your basic needs (electricity, health, education etc) by the government.”

“Freedom to choose, freedom to decide. Respect for the choices”

“To me it is the ability to express my self and that people respect my opinion.”

“Living in dignity means not having to surrender your faith, life or assets to any human or non-human entity”

“Not having to constantly worry about somebody screwing me over just because I lack the financial resources to manipulate legal/bureaucratic processes to my own advantage.”

“Living with all the legitimate rights and freedoms.”

“To compete and survive among the social elite.”

“Having the rights to education and decision making, unlike what happens in the patriarchal societies, is living in dignity.”

“Not having to put up with unwarranted crap from someone solely because they enjoy a better social/financial status. A basic right, sadly not afforded to many in our country.”

“Being content with your current lifestyle and fortune without being subject to derision from society being able to live with your head up; its about not being ashamed of who or what you are.”

“Being respected!”

“One may live in dignity by enjoying a lack of hindrace from the state or the society in the acquisition of basic necessities and privileges such as food, housing, knowledge and freedom of religious observance.”

“Dignity is the line between how others will treat you when things go bad.”

“Living in dignity is when you are judged by what you say and what you do instead of being judged by things that are beyond your control or influence.”

“Living in dignity is wen u can walk tall with respect knowin that ur fundamental necessities are bein fullfilled and tht u can practice ur basic rights (such as speech, religion, property and idelogy) with out the fear ov any external element\force takin it away you or interfering with them.”

“Having respect for yourself and respect for others.”

“Living in dignity is not having to depend on someone for your needs.”

“Living in dignity is all about respect regardless of the standard of living, sufferings and/or dominant circumstances.”

“Living in dignity is when you are respected by others and yourself.”

“Living in dignity means living without fear…fear of losing your life…fear of practising your religion…fear of wondering how you will pay for your next meal…fear of losing yourself…”

“Living with dignity means not having to depend on anyone other than God.”

“Taking control of one’s life and enabling others to do so by providing them with support.”

“Living with dignity means to live with a freedom which encompasses one’s heart, mind and soul.”

From the rest of the world

“Living in dignity means enabling people to live their lives and providing them with access to basic services so that they can provide for themselves”

In 2010, 1.5 billion people were living on less than US$2.0 per day in the Asia Pacific region. Hunger and poverty are both violations of the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of individuals and their families, as protected for all people as human rights.

Food, water, work, health, education (and many more) are all basic rights that allow us to live in dignity.

We may not be able to feed everyone tomorrow, but as young people in Asia Pacific, YOU(th) can show the region that hunger & poverty are one of today’s biggest human rights violations and World Food Day (October 16)/International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (October 17) is your chance to do it!

More Human Rights = Less Poverty It may seem weird to put the two together but poverty is actually the largest human rights violation today! Food, water, work, health, education (and many more) are all basic rights that allow us to live in dignity. What’s worst is that people living in poverty are usually stripped of rights to freedom of expression and political participation so they are left voiceless. More Human Rights will empower them to break through barriers and escape poverty!

DO SOMETHING

We want the world to know how serious hunger & poverty is in Asia Pacific by putting together a report by YOU(th) called Under US$2.0 Recipes – YOU(th) on Hunger & Poverty in Asia Pacific and we’re asking all of YOU(th) to contribute!!!

Since YOUth (especially in Asia Pacific!) are super creative, this report is going to be in the form of a cook book or a cooking show! Send your recipes now!

Got 3 seconds? Add to our cook book!

If you only have 3 seconds, then just share the ingredients that can be bought for, or under US$2.0 and the cooking instructions. Please send us a photo of the final dish if you can!

If you facilitate at least 5 friends to each submit a recipe (and photo if possible), then you will receive a certificate for facilitating World Food Day/International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with APYN as long as you provide their names and emails for verification!

Got 30 minutes? Add to our cooking show!

If you’re feeling very creative, then put on your chef’s hat and take a video of yourself cooking! Your video will be featured on the APYN Cooking Show on YouTube!

Anyone who sends a video will also receive a certificate for facilitating World Food Day/International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with APYN!
